Healthy Habits
by Dr. Yanetsi
As a former pediatrician who supported healthy aging for kids, I found clever techniques to incorporate wellness into their lives. Now as a medical aesthetics provider for adults who want to look their best, I realize that we’re all still kids at heart who need positive reinforcement to succeed. It takes roughly 28 days to form a solid habit, so I recommend everyone find fun, memorable ways to incorporate new steps into their daily regimen. Here are three ideas for throughout the day:
Mindful Mornings
Ever woken up on the wrong side of the bed before? If you start the day on the wrong foot, you’re more likely to drag your feet around all day. Before you even step out of the bed, try sitting up and practicing a few deep breaths in through your nose and out of your mouth. This is a great time to be present and set an intention for your day ahead — a clear mind is critical for your overall health and wellbeing.
Body Breaks
Whether you’re working all day at the desk or glued to the couch, our body’s hydration, mobility, and healthy aging are directly correlated. Every hour, make sure to pause whatever you’re doing to get up and go refill your water. Some people like adding lemon or lime to benefit from the intake of Vitamin C and antioxidants. Just taking 10 minutes to enjoy light stretching will support joint health and help older adults with flexibility. Once the joints are warmed up and lubricated, maybe take an extended break and enjoy a walk outside for fresh air. It is recommended to get 10-15 mins of sunshine every day for Vitamin D.
Hearty Hours
Every single evening should include some form of self-care or self-love. Whether it’s going out to that restaurant you’ve been dreaming of, or staying in with the slow cooker on, evenings are the perfect time to wind down and turn up whatever brings you joy (everything in moderation). When we treat ourselves with compassion, it enhances our self-worth and self-confidence. When it comes to night time, just make sure to love yourself enough to stick to your natural circadian rhythm… sleep is the healthiest habit you can have!
